Flying Colors

Growing up my mother always used to reassure me ´´Don´t worry sweetheart! You´ll pass with flying colors! ´´ I loved hearing this expression because it was always the perfect combination of necessary courage and mystical magic, reminding me of the endless possibilities of life.


As most children, I too had a phase in which I was very literal and did not yet understand the world of abstract thinking or metaphor. Just like I never did quite figure out how Santa Clause knew where I lived, I did not understand how colors, and flying nonetheless, were supposed to somehow find me and sleigh the amorphic dragons of my daily adventures. It was not until years later that I began to understand what my mother really meant...  ´´Passing with flying colors´´ is an upbeat way of saying ´´You will pass/do great without a problem!´´

Many moons later, I can´t help but smile whenever I hear this expression because I now understand the power of flying colors. The creative process is a way of making the invisible visible, of shedding light onto the unconscious so as to make it conscious. It´s a visible expressive journey of connecting with our inner most sacred truths. This awareness, along with the balancing of our two cerebral hemispheres while journeying from our mind to our heart is what contributes to our inner peace, sense of calm and equanimity.   

So, in order to pass with flying colors, be it an exam or any other aspect of life, we need to pause and examine what we are thinking, feeling and believing about ourselves and the world we live in. Are we nourishing ourselves with life affirming thoughts and feelings or are we plaguing our minds with self-imposed, unhealthy limiting beliefs?  The choice, as always, is ours. Sometimes all we need to do is commit to taking a stance and observe what we tell ourselves. Without awareness change is next to impossible. 

Energy follows intention. Whatever we focus on... grows. If we allow fear into our consciousness, we will undoubtedly feel anxious, fearful, scared and worried. Our bodies tighten and constrict. We engage in shallow breathing or even hold our breath. This of course will stand in the way of us being able to think clearly and confidently.  But if we chose to feed our minds, hearts and souls with compassion, kindness, patience and trust while having life-affirming sentiments, we will be able to effortlessly spread our wings and fly through the colors of life.
